Sonia Nanescu, Ph.D.
Scientific Review Officer, Office of Scientific Review
Sonia Nanescu, Ph.D., received her doctorate in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, where she assessed the effects of the active form of vitamin A (retinoic acid) in regenerating neurons. She also received a Ph.D. degree in dentistry at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Gr. T. Popa” in Iasi, Romania, where she investigated the effects of green tea in periodontal disease. During her 5 years of postdoctoral research at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., she investigated the biology of oligodendrocytes and microglia and how the enzymes responsible for the synthesis of the active form of vitamin A could regulate inflammation and remyelination in multiple sclerosis.
Dr. Nanescu joined the Office of Scientific Review (OSR) at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the end of August 2018 as part of the scientific review staff. During her time with OSR at NCCIH she had the opportunity to familiarize herself with the review processes of many different application mechanisms used by the National Institutes of Health. She transitioned to the position of scientific review officer (SRO) in August 2021. In her current capacity as an SRO, she administers the scientific review of applications submitted to NCCIH in response to its various funding opportunity announcements.
