NCCIH staff work in several buildings on and off the main NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, near Washington, DC. Please contact the person you are visiting to verify your destination.

NIH Campus

The NCCIH Director and Executive Offices are located on the NIH campus in Building 31. Research laboratories are located in Buildings 10 and 35.

We encourage you to use public transportation, such as Metrorail subway. There is a convenient Metrorail stop (Medical Center on the Red Line) on the NIH campus. Visitor parking is limited at NIH. Please allow extra time to pass through security. 

NIH Virtual Tour

The NIH Virtual Tour is a dynamic, interactive, online experience that aims to help the public learn more about NIH and the ways we work to help all people live healthier lives.

  • An interactive map to explore the facilities and amenities on NIH’s Bethesda campus such as parking, shuttle information, cafeterias and cafes, restrooms, lactation rooms, and more.

Two Democracy Plaza

Some staff who manage research funding and assist grant applicants work a few miles north of the NIH campus in Two Democracy Plaza (6707 Democracy Boulevard).

Metro

Metrorail (subway) service is available from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and from Union Station (railway). The closest station to Two Democracy Plaza is the Grosvenor-Strathmore station on the Red Line (going toward Shady Grove). Grosvenor-Strathmore is one stop north of the NIH (which is the Medical Center station). From the Grosvenor station, it is necessary to take a cab. Hint for the cab driver: We are located at 6707 Democracy Boulevard, which is near Montgomery Mall, immediately adjacent to Embassy Suites by Hilton Bethesda.

Driving

From Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station

Head west on Tuckerman Lane. Turn left at Old Georgetown Road (Rt. 187). Take right exit toward Rockledge Boulevard/Rockledge Dr (follow signs for Rockledge Dr/I-270 N). Turn left at light onto Rockledge Boulevard. Continue straight to follow Rockledge Drive. Turn right at Democracy Boulevard. The entrance to Democracy Plaza is the first right turn after Fernwood Road.

From Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI)

(40 minutes, 36 miles) Take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway south toward Washington, DC. At I-495 (Capital Beltway), head west toward Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 36, Old Georgetown Road (Rt. 187). Bear right toward Rockville, going northwest for about 0.6 miles. Turn left on Democracy Boulevard for about 0.7 miles. The entrance to Democracy Plaza is the first right turn after Fernwood Road.

From Dulles International Airport

(25 minutes, 22 miles) Head east on the Dulles Airport Access Road for about 13 miles. Exit onto I-495 (Capital Beltway), heading north to Maryland. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 38 (I-270 north toward Rockville/Frederick). Take the Democracy Boulevard East exit. After about 0.2 miles on Democracy Boulevard, turn left onto Fernwood Road. Turn left at first light into Democracy Plaza. Take an immediate left and follow directions to visitor parking.

From Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

(25 minutes, 18 miles) Head north on the George Washington Parkway for approximately 5 miles. Exit onto I-495 (Capital Beltway), heading north to Maryland. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 38 (I-270) north toward Rockville/Frederick. Take the Democracy Boulevard East exit. After about 0.2 miles on Democracy Boulevard, turn left onto Fernwood Road. Turn left at first light into Democracy Plaza. Take an immediate left and follow directions to visitor parking.
