Position
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world’s premier biomedical research institution, is seeking applications from exceptional candidates for the exciting position of Director, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). The Director provides leadership, vision, and direction to the Center and advises the NIH Director and Institute and Center (IC) Directors on the development of NIH-wide policy issues related to complementary and integrative health and related research training and serves as principal liaison with other agencies of the DHHS and the Federal Government. The Director, NCCIH, also serves as the lead representative of the Center to professional societies and the advocacy community and oversees the implementation of the Center’s Strategic Plan and management of the daily operations of the Center. The Director is expected to play a leading role in several initiatives that stretch across multiple ICs and beyond. That includes the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory, the NIH Neuroscience Blueprint, the BRAIN (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies) project, the Music and Health initiative, the NIH Pain Consortium, the NIH-DOD-VA Pain Management Collaboratory, the Interagency Pain Research Coordinating Committee, and the All of Us Research Program. The Director sets the research funding priorities for NCCIH, working with the extramural program divisions and offices with grant portfolios, and the intramural research division, to undertake initiatives and support research that leads to the accomplishment of key scientific priorities identified by NCCIH. To carry out its mission, NCCIH has a staff of approximately 115 employees and an annual budget of approximately $170 million.

Required Qualifications
NIH seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic organization. Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant discipline. In addition, the incumbent must have experience and demonstrated ability in the administration and management of a major national research program as well as broad familiarity and knowledge of complementary and integrative therapies. Ideally, the incumbent should possess in-depth knowledge in one or more of NCCIH’s research areas. In addition to senior-level research experience, applicants must have extensive experience and knowledge of Federal research programs, along with senior-level administrative and interpersonal skills to meet the demands of leading a complex organization. Applicants should have demonstrated leadership in collaborating with different stakeholder groups, including the research community, NIH leadership and staff, patient advocacy organizations, other Federal agencies (i.e., DOD-VA, FDA), international funding organizations, legislators, and the public. Applicants must have demonstrated ability in planning and assessing programs, developing plans to resolve operational problems and issues, and managing financial and human resources. Applicants must also have experience serving as a spokesperson; addressing legislators, the press, scientific organizations, and advocacy and community groups. Applicants should be known and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally, and as individuals of outstanding scientific competence.
This position requires the selectee to be a U.S. citizen and to obtain and maintain, at a minimum, a secret security clearance. This position is a Testing Designated Position, which requires the incumbent to submit to random urine testing for illegal drugs or substances.
Benefits
The Director, NCCIH, will be appointed at a salary commensurate with the selectee’s qualifications and experience and NIH salary guidelines. Full Federal benefits will be provided, including retirement, health and life insurance, leave, and a savings plan (401(k) equivalent).
