Michael Authement, Ph.D.

Scientific Review Officer, Office of Scientific Review

Michael Authement, Ph.D., joined the Office of Scientific Review at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) in February 2023 as a scientific review officer. In this capacity, he coordinates the scientific review of applications submitted to NCCIH in response to various notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs).

Dr. Authement received his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the Uniformed Services University, where he studied the consequences of early life stress on the brain’s reward circuitry. He was then awarded a fellowship at the Center on Compulsive Behaviors within the National Institutes of Health’s Intramural Research Program. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in the Laboratory on the Neurobiology of Compulsive Behaviors. Here his work focused on the role of striatal cholinergic interneurons in compulsive behaviors. Specifically, he studied how acute and chronic exposure to drugs of abuse affects transmission from the cortex onto striatal cholinergic interneurons.
