Media Advisory: Physician/researcher to give April 23 lecture on reexamining how chronic pain is managed in primary care
For Immediate Release:
Tuesday, April 17, 2018
What: Erin E. Krebs, M.D., M.P.H., an internist and health services researcher at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs (VA) Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research, and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota, will present “Reframing the Primary Care Management of Chronic Pain.”
Why: Primary care clinicians play a key role in caring for patients with chronic pain, a complex medical problem. But these clinicians face barriers in doing so—e.g., they may be overburdened and/or work in health systems not designed or equipped to deal effectively with chronic pain. Dr. Krebs will provide an overview of this care and discuss opportunities to improve it, including the use of opioids. On March 8, 2018, she and her colleagues published a report in JAMA on a clinical trial comparing outcomes of prescription and over-the-counter pain medications in a group of VA primary care patients: “Effect of Opioid vs Nonopioid Medications on Pain-Related Function in Patients With Chronic Back Pain or Hip or Knee Osteoarthritis Pain: The SPACE Randomized Clinical Trial.”
When: Monday, April 23, 11 a.m. -noon ET
Where: Lipsett Amphitheater, NIH Clinical Center (Building 10)
10 Center Drive, Bethesda, Md.
This lecture is open to the public and can be viewed in-person or via livestream on NIH Videocast and Facebook Live.
Who's hosting: This lecture is hosted by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the National Institutes of Health as part of NCCIH’s Integrative Medicine Research Lecture Series.
